Music Reviews:

28 Weeks Later –
Music by John Murphy

La La Land Records - 2009

John Murphy does a magnificent job creating the music for this powerhouse sequel.  The soundscape is incredibly rich and varied with a gorgeous mix of guitar, orchestra and electronic elements.  Murphy doesn't go for the overused sounds and approach you see many of today's composers use, instead he focuses on creating melodies that will stay with you and haunt your movie going experience.

There are so many tracks that stand out on this Limited Edition release.  "Welcome to Britain" has a brightness of musical instrumentation you never find on a horror film.  Parts of this track reminded me of Goblin.

Piano and keyboard parts play off each other like two different vocalists in "Firebombing London."  The music is not designed to hit every moment but rather blankets the overall emotional feel that corresponds on the screen.  Beautiful choices made by John Murphy.

The deep percussion that sets a serious tone in "Going Home" while keyboard & piano take us there.

The familiar 28 Theme is energized with the electric guitar in "Don Abandons Alice."  You can feel your heart wrench with each strum of the guitar.

All audio hell breaks loose on London in "Go Go Go" as guitars, drums and electronics build up to a nasty collision that distorts into carnage.

Emotion crackles with intensity in "Walk To Regents Park."  Murphy uses guitars, piano and feedback like sounds to maximum the story telling..

This score is deeply personal for an action horror movie.  It has the feel of a dream that becomes apocalyptic.  The mix crackles with electricity with tremendously beautiful sound.  This Limited Edition CD runs almost 75 minutes so it's jammed to almost full capacity.  La La Land puts together another informative Linear Note booklet that is fantastic.  As a Bonus Track - There's even an enlightening thirteen minute Interview with John Murphy that lets us into his creative process and he tells you what he was going for in 28 WEEKS LATER.

One of the best reviews I'll do this year.
