Chris A. has spent the time and effort to collect the stories of Jeffrey Thompson, Erin Halk, Nathan Bray and Darrell Abbott to flesh out these people and what lead them up to this shocking night. Chris A. also passes along info on who the deranged killer was and what lead him to commit these terrible crimes. I also like how Chris A. spends time talking about the venue and those who were part of the staff that fateful evening, including the police & rescue workers. The way he divides his attention is very admirable and gives credit to those who without question deserve it. This book in no way is a knock against Damageplan and their individual members but it gives time to those who were not "famous." The book is written in a fashion were all four people who perished get chapters devoted to their lives. I like way the writer incorporates actual Pantera song titles & lyrics as Chapter titles and headings. That was cool and creative. In fact, there positively could not be a better main title for this book. It is so fitting and kind of prophetic that it's kind of scary. The eleventh chapter "Demons Be Driven" is honestly as intense as anything you could read this Halloween season. An almost second by second account of what went down on 12/8/04. Chris A. incorporates all the testimonies he gathered mixed with photos, video captures and map/floor plans of the club. You will honestly be able to picture what happened and it's brutal & quite powerful. True crime books are always hard to put down and when you combine the rock metal stars involved with the courageous, good natured people who got hurt along the way, enabled this book to grab you by the pants and plant you in your seat. As a fan of Pantera since '83, in fact my first finished project as a director was an amateur music video for the early Pantera song "Come On Eyes," I was very saddened by what happened to Diamond (later Dimebag) Darrell Abbott. This book tells exactly how the exceptional guitarist was murdered. But what this book really did for me was to expose those wonderful folks who responded trying to save Abbott and his band members. When someone is willing to give up their own life for someone they love or admire, it's awe inspiring and moving.. AVDOP is a great read and a book I whole-heartedly endorse.
