Anthrax: Worship Music
2011 Megaforce Records
Produced by Anthrax, Scrap 60, Jay Ruston

By Mike Porciello

Here's something to heavy up your Fall, and get ya through Winter. Joey Belladonna's back, and the band means business!!

New York's own, Anthrax, still as street smart as they come, spread the infection, with their 2011 release, which stands right up there with the likes of Among The Living, and The Sound of White Noise. It was interesting to know that this album was originally recorded with vocalist Dan Nelson, but scrapped in favor of reuniting with vocalist Joey Belladonna. Bummer, huh? Yeah right!

As soon as the 14 song cd begins with "Worship", a dirge-like, pulsating, quick intro/instrumental, you'll just seem to get the feeling that..............something's coming..................something's coming..................something's coming...................something's coming!! Bam!!, there it is, heavy as fornication, track 2, "Earth On Hell". That's about as heavy as Worship Music, in it's entirety gets, but don't take that as a bad omen by ANY means. The rest is all about keeping with a modern sound, powering home those chords, and the double bass attack. Thrash is alive and well, rejuvenated, reinvented, and far exceeding the critics expectations, here in the 21st century. Oh yeah!!

You can expect the band to also return to form with their witty,  tongue in cheek humor, now that another fire has been lit under their asses. Whether it's killing zombies on "Fight 'Em Til You Can't", offering lessons in relations with "The Devil You Know", (thus stealing the title from Heaven and Hell's final studio offering), or crooked religion on "Judas Priest", therefore paying homage to a band they've continually idolized, and have done some touring with. The one to really push the envelope on Worship Music is door bell intro, "In The End", a sort of heavy as hell power ballad, but no love song indeed!! "Crawl" reminds me a little of Nine Inch Nails "The Day The World Went Away". (Another group or individual rather, with group of musicians, who need(s) to make a strong comeback with some "worship music" of his/their own) On that song, Belladonna sounds almost like previous vocalist John Bush, who was no slouch WHATSOEVER, and won over many fans.

All in all, this band had never sounded so good!!  Anthrax: "Worship Music" gets runner up for The 2001 Halloween Season CD picks. Pay the money, worship the music. Best of luck to John Bush as he re-launches his career fronting Armored Saint.
