Big Trouble In Little China - Limited Edition

La La Land Records – 2008

Easily John Carpenter's most underrated film.  In my book, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is a gem of a soundtrack and La Land Land Records does an outstanding job of putting the entire score on 2-CDs.  Altogether featuring a running time of 96:29 minutes, which includes 2 Bonus Tracks.

The first five tracks set the diverse mood John Carpenter and Alan Howarth achieve with this score.  "Prologue" has the trademark Carpenter low bottom synth line establishing a tone you must take notice of.  "Pork Chop Express (Main Title)" is a fun romper stomper of a track that gets you feeling good.  "Abduction At Airport" is one of my favorites.  The low churning keyboard gives the cue menace.  It really drives what is happening on the screen.  The other sporadic notes have Chinese Favor.  "The Alley (Procession)" builds the tension as a massive gang fight is about to take place.  "The Alley (War)" is the musical battle that explodes on the screen as the Chang Sing go at it with The Wing Kong.

"The Storms" brings a lightness to the score that gives a breather after the intense action cue.  "Here Comes The Storms" is very cool with the mystical, supernatural elements brought to life.

"Lo Pan's Domain/Looking For A Girl" is the other important theme element to the score.  The old Chinese Wizard's lonely. sad existence is represented with melancholy composition that gives the film's villain heart and soul.

"The Great Arcade" is almost eight minutes of all character elements coming together for one final battle.

This 3,000 Limited Edition soundtrack has some of the finest linear notes I've ever read.  I'd say they are virtually worth the CD's price tag.  Daniel Schweiger does an expert job of writing about the production of the movie and all the details of John Carpenter & Alan Howarth's score.  Excellent photos, each track broken down musically, what more could you ask for?

A masterpiece soundtrack release.
