Music Reviews:

Blood and Chocolate -
Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Lakeshore Records – 2007

Produced by Gregory Butler

I haven't seen the movie Blood and Chocolate, but I have to say, given what I've heard regarding this soundtrack, it has garnered my interest.

A nod to the pioneers of alternative rock, some lesser known, and up and coming artists, tip their hats and carry the torch forward.  Hearing these songs, has me recalling memories of early MTV, and New Wave radio, when I needed a break from headbanging music.

Some of the standouts on this brilliant CD include:
A reworking of Depeche Mode's "Stripped", done by Shiny Toy Guns. A duet between Carah Faye Charrow, and Chad Petree, it evokes elements of fantasy. Lunar Click
reimaginesThe Cure's "A Forest", into something more strange, and a bit easier on the ears, than the 1980 classic. Bobby Gold works wonders with his version of The Smith's "How Soon Is Now", although I don't believe it holds up the original. Also, Nine Inch Nails gets the old makeover 1,2 punch with Mercury Falls (featuring Ai Kusuhara) tackling "Terrible Lie", from 1989's Pretty Hate Machine

Top honors in my opinion, goes to The Distants, covering the 1984 Echo and The Bunnymen classic "The Killing Moon". WHOA!!, this one might leave you breathless. Check out the trance like, "Haunted When The Minutes Drag", by Collide.  Billy Idol's "Flesh For Fantasy" is given the makeover treatment as well, by the talented Fiction Company. Last, but not least, what would be a fall season review, without the song "Halloween"? Perhaps The Misfits most popular song, done over Tre Lux.

One can't help but feel the elements of witchcraft, the macabre, torture, and a certain temporary romance, which comes with Autumn. Personally I'm a Spring/early Summer individual, but this soundtrack, to that of an independent movie, whose musicians have covered some standards in the field of individualism, can't get much better. This has a fall-like feel to it, and a rebirth of standards.

The artists whose songs were covered on this motion picture soundtrack, have really carved quite a niche for themselves, in terms of what their movement represented, and into the music business itself. Such said artists, groups, and as well as those who were not mentioned, to hail from the late 1970's throughout the early 1990's, were the backbone of the Alternative, Goth, New Wave, and even Punk movements. It's a shame that some have become parodies of themselves today. Their music was talented, their vision was one, and their creativity will never be matched.

So.............., for those of you, young enough to trick or treat, download this, or watch the songs on YouTube. This is what a certain element of the older generation listened to, and it should set you into a peaceful mood. For the older generation staying home this Halloween, watching your hard earned money fly out the door, on a chocolate covered broom with sugar coated bristles, this CD will certainly resurrect memories past.
