ChromeSkull: Laid To Rest 2 - Blu-ray Image Entertainment - 2011 Directed by Robert Hall |

The movie begins with some nice photography as color is vividly captured on the screen. A team of medical personnel and techno geeks arrive on the scene where the first movie ended (though shooting locations are obviously different). They come to rescue ChromeSkull from certain death. Brian Austin Green plays ChromeSkull's assistant Preston who runs this team when the metal face maniac isn't able to. This whole idea that there would be a team of people helping a psycho murder countless people with none of them showing concern about getting arrested or even killed by their lethally deadly boss isn't realistic and didn't make sense. But it's a slasher movie so what do you expect. The team revitalizes the tall chrome dome so that he can go back out to butcher. Robert Hall comes up with as many innovative ways possible to allow his team to supply some gruesome make-up FX to splash blood and slice flesh across the screen. Robert Hall focuses on the carnage as much as possible with all sorts of graphic mayhem. I didn't really find it scary but it is a special make-up effects buffet served up with healthy doses for your pleasure. I'm all for practical FX over CGI so if you prefer something real over animation this should suit your fancy. I'd compare Robert Hall to Rob Zombie as a director, in that they both focus on violence rather than mood and suspense. The kills are designed to punch you in the face or gut. I don't know if it's Hall and his writing partner Kevin Borcade's script, the actors cast or Hall's ability as a director but I didn't care for most of the movie's acting. The characters did not talk or act like real people to me. I did enjoy watching the Bonus Features on this Blu-ray more than the movie itself. When watching A Cut Above: Creating ChromeSkull Featurette, it was surprising to see that the movie was filmed with essentially a still digital camera. Just seeing how small this camera is would shock anyone that a movie could be made using it as the primary camera. I give the film team kudos for having the foresight and guts to make their feature film on such an unlikely tool. Audio Commentary is pretty relaxed with Director Robert Hall, Co-writer Kevin Borcade and Star Brian Austin Green sharing their experience of making this sequel. Jump to a Kill Feature allows you to go directly to each scene to feature bloodshed Bloopers & Deleted Scenes are mildly interesting and you get the film's Trailer also. Overall CHROMESKULL: LAID TO REST 2 is a throwback to the approach taken by gory horror movies of the past. The Blu-ray looks good and has some nice extras.
