COLD PREY is an excellent slasher movie with fantastic production value and spectacular film locations. I like how the story unfolds and the filmmakers take their time to develop the characters and situation before the killings begin.
I like the stylistic choices on how the film opens and the opening titles with cool music sets the mood. Right off the bat you know that you are watching a film that has been made with care and has some talent behind it.
Five friends go skiing/snowboarding in the magnificent mountains in Norway. The white landscape (snow) mixed with open sky and jagged mountain peaks are jaw droppingly beautiful. You don't see this kind of look often, especially in a horror film.
One of the guys has an accident and hurts his ankle bad. The other friends are forced to take their friend for help. They end up coming upon a large abandoned
ski lodge, where they take refuge from the freezing cold conditions. But shortly after arriving, someone or something starts picking them off one by one.
You've seen this type of story before but the execution, filming locales and even the Norwegian cast which are quite good make this film special.
Anchor Bay has gathered some cool supplements which include: an Alternate
Ending. We see storyboards cut together with what was in the film, to
get an idea of what the filmmakers wanted to do at the end but didn't have the time or money to pull off. There's also
Deleted Scenes. I loved the featurettes, which delve into almost all the important aspects
behind the production. You see clips from rehearsals, shooting and interviews.
Bloopers were kind of funny. There is a Music Video and an assortment of
Trailers. Two things that surprised me were two short films. MOUNTAIN ROSE RUNS AMOK looks and feels like it was made by the cast. It's kind of silly little short. One of Director Roar Uthaug
short films AN EVENING IN THE GREEN, is funny little speck of gore that would make Peter Jackson smile.
One reviewer called COLD PREY "Probably The Most Perfect Slasher Movie Ever," I wouldn't go that far as that title
will always belong to HALLOWEEN. But COLD PREY stands up rather nicely against most films of it's kind.
I highly recommend COLD PREY and applaud Anchor Bay for releasing this little diamond in the rough of horror film releasing. I would actually say that with this film and THE ALPHABET KILLER, Anchor Bay has released it's two best newer film releases in quite some time.
