Review by Mike Porciello
In
October of 2002, the area surrounding Washington D.C. was held
captive, as one by one, people were shot dead, in a horrific
crime spree, gripping our nation, as many people
were afraid to even leave their own homes. D.C.
Sniper, based loosely on the 2002 killing
spree of (now)
executed murderer, John
Allen Muhammed, dubbed "The Beltway
Sniper", and Lee
Boyd Malvo, is a film that explores one man's pathological
reasoning, working in tandem with disturbing results. Ken
Foree, the hulking tough
guy, nice guy, bouncer, trucker, survivalist, trades in
his larger than life persona, for a more intellectual sociopath.
Tory N. Thompson plays Lee, Muhammed's sheepish adoptive son; ever at
the ready to carry out his adoptive father's apocalyptic plan,
via high powered rifle.
A cat and mouse pursuit ensues, as Det. Miles Callahan ( a Don Imus-like Ulli Lommel), and Agent James Rogan (Kriese) (who is also going through personal turmoil in this documentary style thriller) must find the needle in the haystack, as they're left with few clues, as to who is causing the outskirts of the nation's capital, great unrest. When the shots are fired with precision accuracy, when the blood splatters, and the body falls, D.C. Sniper suggests a gruesome taste of what it must be like to fall victim to an unknown shooter. For a low budget exploratory film, the attack scenes were well choreographed, and will leave a sickening sensation, to those who aren't into horror movies. Robert J. Walsh's score, very dirge-like, offers images of an October setting, and compliments the movie throughout. Writer Ulli Lommel's vision of The Beltway Sniper, although not completely accurate, will still send chills down your spine. John Allen Muhammed's rage boiled for years, until he took out his frustrations on innocent victims. For that my heart goes out to all who suffered, and my gratitude is extended to former Montgomery County, Maryland police chief Charles Moose, whose dedication to the job, made him the primary individual responsible for bringing John Allen Muhammed to justice. Just remember, there are always people out there, from every walk of life, some good, some bad. What you see on the outside, may not always be the same on the inside. Enjoy the movie.
