Fiona - Unbroken

Retrospect Records – 2011

It's really cool having this feisty female powerhouse of a vocalist back in the hard rock world.

The Irish-American singer gets right back in the groove with "Loved Along The Way."  Tommy Denander's guitar rhythm is Ritchie Sambora-like and he plays an excellent, cleanly-picked solo.

Fiona brings a gravel-like quality to her voice in "Broken."  It's a attribute I first noticed when she sang "Funny Valentine" song for the Demi Moore movie NO SMALL AFFAIR.

It sounds as though Fiona is using a true life experience to tell the story of "I've Released You."  It's a break-up song that feels like it's coming from experience.

I was surprised to hear Fiona do a rendition of the Pat Benatar song "Shadows Of The Night."

I like how all the instruments are mixed in "Badge Of Love."  The guitar, bass, horns and drums all are given space to be heard.  Fiona nails the vocals with emotion and power.  Tommy Denander's guitar is precise and impressive.

"Wild One" is a mid-tempo rocker telling the tale of a young girl meeting an older guy who drives a bike.  I'll bet it's about someone real rather than about the Marlon Brando movie of the same name.

Robin Beck sings a duet with Fiona in "This Heart."  I'd swear Beck belts it out like Ann Wilson of the band Heart.  Great vocal team up.

"Get Yer Kix" has almost a country rock guitar sound.  This one sounds like it would be fun for the band and a live audience.  James Christian who not only plays bass but produced, mixed and mastered this album and gets a nice hard rocking sound in "Salt On My Wings."

Fiona gets really saucy in "I Love You But Shut Up."

"Everything You Are" is an uplifting torch song for Fiona to let it all out with her voice.  This song also features powerful background vocals from Robin Beck and James Christian.

Unbroken is a really sturdy return of one of my favorite female rockers.  It has been almost 20-years since Fiona last recorded an album.  You'd never know that from the quality of this new CD.  She doesn't miss a beat.
