Will Smith
Charlize Theron
Jason Bateman

Touted as a comedy, HANCOCK is somewhat a drama dressed up as a super hero movie.  I've never really a seen a movie remotely like it.  But what works for the film is the excellent cast, edgy action packed direction of Peter Berg and the interesting story of superhero character who is reluctant to be a hero.

The reluctant part of Will Smith's character John Hancock is what also may turn people off to this movie.  A good example of this is my wife said she didn't know if she liked it.

I noticed director Michael Mann as an actor in an early corporate meeting scene and then later found out in the The Making of Hancock that he was doing to direct this film.  Mann later decided it wasn't right for him and he handpicked Peter Berg to direct.  Berg responded by making a film that looks in many ways like a Michael Mann film.

Will Smith is his normal dependable movie star self.  Jason Bateman is an excellent choice to play off Smith, as his character brings optimism against Smith's character's negative outlook on life.  Charlize Theron looks terrific and she surprised me again as she pulls off a multi-dimensional character that might be surface level in lesser hands.

This Unrated Edition of the movie comes with some cool supplements.  Besides Superhumans: The Making of Hancock, you also get the Seeing The Future which looks at scenes in the movie and how the filmmakers used pre-visualization to prepare for the actual shooting.  Building A Better Hero looks at John Dykstra's incredible special effects.  Dyskstra says, "One of the problems with visual effects films is if you use the technology that exists when you begin the film, usually your obselete by the time you release the film.  You have to go into it with the assumpiton of what you are going to be able to invent."  Bumps and Bruises is a Stunts featurette.  Mere Mortals: Behind The Scenes with "Dirty Pete" captures the directing style of Peter Berg.  Will Smith says, "Pete is definitely a couple clicks off center."

HANCOCK is a strange Hollywood blockbuster that has more going on in the center than most film's of it's kind.
