Review by Mike Porciello
In the doldrums of your mind, you've
thought about taking a life, haven't you? Admit it, we all have. The fact that the unspeakable has never been
carried out, is what snaps the better of our society back to reality. But
what if you were so well to do, you knew enough underground connections, at just the right time, you could more than likely get away with it? Would
you pay to snuff someone out?
Parallel that thought with the ultimate
lesson of naivete, and I present to you my first choice of recommendation for this October: BOO!, as my 8th
grade English teacher Mr. Gers would yell, to get your attention. The immortal Quentin Tarantino presents "Hostel", a film
written and directed
by the legendary Eli Roth, about two gullible American buddies in search of a dip into a man's basic instinct! Did you ever hear the expression:
"if it sounds too good to be true, then it is'!?
After a night at an Amsterdam brothel, the boys are told to head East in search of hotter hookers, and like easily duped Bluefish, they take the
bait. Josh (Derek Richardson), and (Paxton) Jay Hernandez, soon begin to fall victim to a sick and demented plan, with what appears to be a corrupt
society as a whole.
The movie at first almost seems like soft-core porn, but near the 45 minute mark, things begin to take a torturous turn to the left. By nearly
an hour into this instant classic, the momentum is in full swing, as
chainsaws are wielded, bullets are fired, corpses are burned, and death's stench can almost envelop you in it's grasp. Thrust into the fight of his
life, Paxton must choose his moves carefully, and butcher his way out, if he wants to survive intact!
I chose this movie simply for it's shock value, over it's fright value. Somewhere something like this exists, remember that! Still though, a
definite classic to come out of the era of torture, from the mid part of
this very decade. (2006 to be exact) "Hostel" will keep you on
the edge of your seat, as you'll easily go through 2 bags popcorn on this one. The
hunted becomes the hunter, all the while, as the movie maintains an intimacy of privacy.
For added features, check out the alternate ending, which I thought was more effective as a personal payback! Disc 2 contains many great features,
one of them being "An Icelandic Meal with Eythor Gudjonsson",
who treats viewers to a nice delicious Smoked Lamb's Face!
