Kip Winger – From The Moon To The Sun

Frontiers Records – 2008

From the first track, you can tell that that Kip Winger's life must be in a little bit of a better place than his last few albums because there is a great deal of optimism running throughout the disc.  This is not just in the lyrics but the music as a whole.

"Every Story Told" has a stellar mix of clean guitar with layered synth lines, samples & loops and driving percussion.  Kip Winger's voice is unmistakable.

In "Nothing," I like the way Winger mixes the soaring vocal parts with quiet talking.  This gives the tune layers of texture.  The parts with just acoustic guitar and his voice are also powerful because the rest of mix drops out.

"Where Will You Go" has the feel of one of Winger's musical heroes, The Beatles.  Andy Timmons soulful guitar is very fitting.

Peter Gabriel's musical influence is felt in "Pages And Pages."  I like the soft bongos towards the end of the track with the piano, violin and cello.

"Ghosts" is a moody instrumental piece that could easily fit into a movie.  Kip Winger has written music that is performed flawlessly with violins, viola, Cello, bass, harp and piano.  You would never think the rocker who started out with Alice Cooper, had very successful hard rock band with his last name is the same guy capable of this beautiful classical piece.  But Winger nails it.

"In Your Eyes Another Life" is almost surreal with it's beautiful composition.  Winger's voice here is in top form as he captures a wide range of emotion.

Winger tells the story of a lost girl battling for life in "Runaway."

Why the heck isn't "California" on the radio.  This tune flows so effortlessly there isn't a soul out there who couldn't enjoy it.  It features passionate performances on every musical level and because of this, will stay with you.  One of the most memorable songs in Kip Winger's career so far.

The Beatlistic "What We Are" is fun driving tune.

I love the production sound captured in "One Big Game."  Clean, strong and diverse.  Winger's voice in this track actually reminded me of David Bowie.

Ambience is strong in "Why," which is something I can really appreciate.  The clean acoustic guitar sound Winger gets in this track and is found in other songs on this & his other solo albums has become a trademark.  The celestial voices in the background saying "Why," is amazing to listen to on your stereo system.

The percussion sound in "Reason To Believe" and Rod Morgenstein's drums are hot.  This playful little tune is so darn catchy and hook laden with different instrumentation, I'm bewildered you don't hear this on the radio somewhere.

There is a cool, unique version of "Monster" to wrap up this experimental refreshing CD.

Cenk Eroglu must be mentioned for his excellent musical contributions and help with co-production on four tracks.

Kip Winger is boldly charting new musical territory without fear.  I have the utmost respect for an artist doing this and he's not just trying new things, he's conquering each musical plateau.  From The Moon To The Sun is one of the standout CDs I've listened to his year.
