Melanie Mitrano - All Things Gold

Big Round Records – 2009

The talented vocalist dives into Jazz with an excellent band behind her; Matt King Piano/organ, Andy Eulau on bass and Scott Neumann on drums.

"Immune" is a quick jazz burner that made me visualize a COTTON CLUB like setting with Melanie performing with her band on stage.

The lights are dimmed in "Something To Go On."  The spotlight shines on Mitrano to allow her to get sultry and the trombone gives the song a different solo sound.

It's amazing how much the tempo can shift within a jazz setting.  Melanie kicks thing sup a bit in "My Finest Hour."

"All Things Gold" has an old time feel that should have came from a by gone era.

Mitrano flirts with "I Ain't Got You," which is playful, fun and carries the sweetness of innocence.

Piano and saxophone help infuse "Smarten Up" with passion.  Melanie uses the song to call out to that special someone you are interested in.

Mitrano's voice takes flight and soars in "She Floats Away."  The band plays with subtly to leave the audio space wide open like a big sky.

I could have imagined "You Can't Unring Bells" in a Howard Hawks film.  MM kind of sings in a way that would have worked beautiful in those quick talking romantic comedies.

The trombone is cool amongst the jazzy groove in "The Kind of Cryptology."  I really like how Mitrano's voice dances with the music.

"Backstory" is a soulful ballad that is tinted in the blues.

Trumpet and flugelhorn go off with piano in "Never Been to Brazil."

"Wednesdays" is a sad little love song that could be Melanie's most relaxed performance on the album.

I love the little spooky organ beginning of "Toccota Talk To me."  This last tune is energetic, fun and a great way to end the CD.

On her last album Mitrano aimed for a bunch of musical targets.  With All Things Gold she aims for a specific target and hits a dead-on bull's-eye.
