Niyaz – Nine Heavens

Six Degrees – 2008

This 2-CD set features two musical version of the same album.  Disc Two has the acoustic cession of Nine Heavens.  In the album notes Azam Ali and Loga Ramin Torkian say the aim of Niyaz is to bridge the gap between traditional and modern by utilizing poetry of mystics, traditional instruments and balance it with electronics.

The bands Middle Eastern heritage is clearly heard thought.  I found "Inman" to be over seven minutes of peace.  the stillness is a real quality in the song.  My guess is the track is written for Ali & Torkian's newborn son, Inman Ali Torkian.

Azam Ali is pretty amazing on the entire album and I do think she has the voice to crossover to a worldwide audience.  The music of Niyaz is very meditative and immediately takes you to another part of our world.

The three members of the band, which also includes Carmen Rizzo on keyboards and drums, do an admirable job of sharing their musical heritage in such a way that others will appreciate it.
