Review by Michael Knight Otis is a dark comedy about a young man aptly named Otis, and his love for a young high school cheerleader for whom he has been fortunate enough to take to prom. The only problem is, Otis is way beyond his prom age years and his “date” is a kidnapped high school-er locked up in his dungeon fantasy world. It is quite humorous watching the bulbous, awkward and socially inept Otis throw tantrums as his “kidnapped date” refuses to say her lines in the script he has written for the perfect prom night. He has the prom dress for her, the muscle car he drives her to prom in (complete with back-mask film roll to give the illusion that they’re in motion) and the disco ball that they will dance under as he attempts his first prom night kiss. Now if she would only cooperate and say her damn lines like he wrote them, they would enjoy the perfect evening.
Otis has an older brother that comes by for a
visit during the playing-out of his fantasy. This disrupts the whole prom
night as he hastily leaves the underground dungeon to greet his brother
and attempt to get rid of him without arousing any unnecessary attention.
This gives the young lady an opportunity to escape and escape she does.
After speaking with the detective assigned to
the case the young lady’s parents are worried about the insanity plea.
More worried that this bastard Otis will cop a plea deal than their own
safety, these “normal” suburban
parents go out and hunt down their daughter’s kidnapper themselves. This
is where the movie gets even more bizarre as the parents devise grotesque
torture methods to wield against their daughter’s assailant.
Many tools of torture are devised and used
including, jumper cables clamped to a spatula, bug spray, a nail gun and a
variety of other home remedies. You really must see this scene because
anything I say about it will not do it justice. The scene will
simultaneously make you laugh aloud and cringe in horror. I don’t want
to be a spoiler so I am not going to go any further with the movie’s
description.
Otis gets my nod of approval for it’s
inventiveness and weird dark comedic twists. This was probably quite
different than most movies I will ever
see. I watched the movie twice and had many a chuckle from it’s comedic
values during both viewings. I give it two bloody stumps (where my thumbs
used to be) up!!
