Predators - Music by John Debney

La La Land Records – 2010

John Debney takes Alan Silvestri's themes established in PREDATOR and PREDATOR 2, uses them a little and then expands the majority of score his own way.  But the way in which he does this, sounds like an natural extension of what came before. This is a smart move as it feels like it's always been part of the series, yet it's new and it works.

Debney gets his orchestra to make big sounding music that gets quite at times and can blast you in the face at others.

Right out of the gate we "Free Fall" into action packed music that is designed to boost your adrenaline and make you want to face an unstoppable adversary.

"Hound Attack" is relentless with the orchestra pushed to chase down the human beings in the film.  All of which makes for a thrilling audio experience.  "We Run We Die" proves that you don't always have to be loud and brash to create full blown tension.  The main PREDATOR theme comes right at you with gorgeous orchestra at full tilt in "Predators Attack."

The exotic African percussion in "Meet Mr. Black" gives the track a real animalistic feel.  It also gives this track a sense of history and let's us know the pitch black Predator is battle ready. The distorted electric guitar in "They See Our Traps" is kind of cool.

"Smoke" feels like a roller coaster jetting through the Predators exotic, battle scared planet.  "Stan's Last Stand" is all out war, with weird sounds that must come from the Predators.  "Edwin and Isabelle Captured" has almost a hard rock sound with electric guitar and heavy drums.

"Predator Fight, Royce Runs" dances between classic action horror scoring and something that sounds not quite human.  Something major happens in the film while listening to this track because the voices used give it real importance and you sense something or someone is defeated.

The main drum sound in "She's Paralyzed" is cool and kind of hip.  This is the longest on the CD running 6 minutes and 5 seconds.  It's filled with frantic drums and high pitched sounds against cavernous deep sounds that moan and groan.

Something really cool that Debney mentions in his Linear Notes is that he dedicates this score to his hero and mentor Jerry Goldsmith.  That late composer would be awfully proud of this fantastic score and probably is smiling up in soundtrack heaven.

La La Land Records has put out a score that runs almost 69 minutes of tension filled action scoring.  The package includes first rate linear notes which is done with La La Land Records signature style.  John Debney has created a soundtrack that will satisfy fans of the original film and attract new listeners who have yet to go back to listen to what Alan Silvestri created about twenty-three years ago.
