Anyone growing up in the 60`s and 70`s will recognize these titles as they were frequently broadcast on TV and reviewed in classic monster mags as “ Famous Monsters of Filmland “ and “The Monster Times”

It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955)

79 Mins.

Director: Robert Gordon
Screenplay: George Worthing Yates

Starring:
Kenneth Tobey
Faith Domergue

This is Harryhausen`s Octopus movie that everyone remembers. Some remember it had Eight Tentacles; others remember less, See how many you can count.

The destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge , the sinking of a ship at sea, and the battle between soldiers with flame throwers against the octopus are scenes worth repeated viewing.

Monster Buster of the 50`s Kenneth Tobey and hottie Faith Domergue make this all the more fun.

Earth vs. the Flying saucers

(1956)

83 Mins.

 Director: Fred F. Sears

Screenplay: George Worthing Yates

Starring:
Hugh Marlowe
Joan Taylor

Classic Movie with Nice Special Effects (For `56 anyway)

The title says it all, but what it doesn’t tell you is that this makes a perfect Saturday afternoon movie to spend with the kids. Invasion from space film with Martians, Military Combat, The Saucers, Destruction of Washington D.C.`s Landmarks and all in 83 mins.

20 Million miles to Earth (1957)

Director: Nathan Juran    82 mins

Screenplay: Bob Williams

Starring:
William Hopper
Joan Taylor

This is a personal favorite of mine. I have viewed this movie many times over the years in various incarnations, VHS, Laserdisc and now DVD and it never fails to entertain.

The Ymir is a fascinating creation that has stood the test of time. Often compared to “King Kong “an expressive, sympathetic creature, one cant help but to cheer and root for the big lug as he smashes up Rome .

Final Thought:

These Movies were a lot of fun growing up and they still are. Give those multi-million dollar movies a rest and go back to a time when it was Giant Octopus`, Flying Saucers or misunderstood Venusians. These movies now look better than they have looked in years, especially with all those 32 – 46 inch flat screens in our homes and DVD players.  So…….. Sit back, turn down the light s and let’s go back and revisit our childhoods with these 3 classic movies.
