Aspire: To grab hold of your dream.
Imagine this: One day, you're fixing copy
machines, the next day, you're singing for your favorite metal band.
That was the theme of the movie "Rockstar", starring Mark
Wahlberg, based on the life of Tim "Ripper" Owens.
When Rob
Halford parted ways with Judas
Priest in the early 1990's, Tim Owens from Judas Priest
cover band British Steel
was selected to replace him. The band went on to release two
critically acclaimed albums, "Jugulator", and
"Demolition", and toured with Ripper around the world. I saw
both tours, and one was better better than the next.
Now with Halford back in Priest, and with years of experience under his belt, Ripper unlocks the wolves on first ever solo release "Play My Game". This is a journey into his roots of metal, and a showcase of some serious underrated songwriting talents. Accompanying Ripper on his album are the likes of the following seasoned professionals : Bob Kulick, Rudy Sarzo, Simon Wright, John Comprix, James LoMenzo, Brett Chassen, Jeff Loomis, Mike Callahan, Dennis Hayes, Ray Luzier, Steve Stevens, Carlos Cavazo, Billy Sheehan, Michael Wilton, Dave Ellefson, Doug Aldrich, Tony Franklin, Bobby Jarzombeck, Neil Zaza, Chris Caffery, Marco Mendoza, and Vinny Appice. Yeah THOSE guys! Starting Over kicks it off, as a shoot from the hip, inspirational rocker. Believe is a gritty, riff driven old schooler, and The Cover Up is a double bass, blistering scorcher. My favorite is No Good Goodbyes. How true it is! The Light is an all out screamer, and The Shadows Are Alive winds through tempo changes, and keeps the metal alive. A perfect 100%, from a guy who continues to bleed molten metal! True to both the old and new school, with a handcrafted brilliance, Play My Game will have you playing Ripper's album over and over again! A special thank you to those two girls, whoever, and wherever you are, that gave Judas Priest drummer Scott Travis a tape of Owens fronting British Steel, who then gave it to Glenn, K.K., and Ian for review. You keep metal alive!
