I had not viewed this movie since I first saw it when it was released on VHS in the mid-80s. Plus with it's nasty reputation, I remember it being rough and kind of sleazy. I was a bit surprised at how serious the film is and it's actually a nice little horror film. I'm not saying it's tame, Santa Claus killing folks is pretty intense, it's just the film is better made than I recall. A young boy witnesses his family getting murdered by a criminal dressed as Santa Claus. This includes seeing his Mom raped on a backwoods street. This horrible scene sends the boy to an orphanage and he's traumatized by the experience. After the boy grows up in the stern religious environment, he seems to be on the straight an narrow path to a normal life. But that changes when he's asked to be Santa Claus at the store he works. I really enjoyed the snowy Utah locations the movie was shot. The cast was real good and I could swear I've seen the actress Tara Buckman who played the mother, in other movies. After looking her up on IMDB, there's no doubt I've seen this lovely lady in some of the extensive work she did in movies and television. This DVD comes with an Audio Interview with Director Charles E. Sellier, Jr. who goes over the entire history of the movie and how he reluctantly took the job directing it because he usually enjoys just producing. There's also the Theatrical Trailer, Poster and Still Gallery and Santa's Stocking of Outrage. This is a DVD that I highly recommend. You've got a film that delivers some shocking moments. SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT would be a treat for Halloween and in a strange way get you ready for Christmas. www.anchorbayentertainment.com
