SPLICE is a very daring, bold film that will fascinate and repulse you. It reminds me of the earlier half of David Cronenberg's career, it's scientific, intelligent, violent and highly sexual. Two scientists work away at trying to solve gene splicing, reproduction and their efforts take them into dangerous territory. They end up creating a being that is partially human, but definitely multiple parts animal and even insect. The line between trusting this thing as one of us is crossed and all hell breaks loose. It felt weird sitting in the theater and see the reaction to what transpires on the big screen. You could feel the audience fascination at the same time an uneasiness to experience it. I've heard some complaints that SPLICE is cold but that's no different than the early Cronenberg work. I never felt emotionally attached to THEY CAME FROM WITHIN, RABID, THE BROOD, SCANNERS or VIDEODROME. But I liked all those films never-the-less. SPLICE belongs with that group. Plus throw in the fact that SPLICE was shot in the frigid conditions of Canada, just like all the above Cronenberg films. This is a modern day film that fans should appreciate the same. SPLICE took chances, was made with guts and hit a bull's-eye as a classic body horror film.
