Stanley Kubrick - The Complete Films

By Paul Duncan

Taschen - 2011
ISBN 978-3-8365-2775-0
$14.99, 192 pages

A fine looking oversized book, covering the legendary filmmaker’s entire career.  Kubrick’s story is told through text and maybe more importantly photos in Taschen’s high-style.  Beautiful pictures in both color and black and white adorn this attractive book.

There are neat little telling Stanley Kubrick quotes spread throughout the book that give you quick peeks into the director’s mind.  Usually they are related to a particular film discussed and I found these helpful at understanding what Stanley Kubrick was all about.

Reading this book made me want to see the Kubrick titles I haven’t like; PATHS OF GLORY, BARRY LYNDON and EYES WIDE SHUT.

It was insightful reading about how Kubrick felt about being hired by the movie studios.  He didn’t like to be controlled and after a couple sour experiences, wouldn’t do a movie unless he had total control of it.  I know this probably contributed to his reputation as a tough task master but I love how passionate of a filmmaker he was about making a film to achieve his vision.

Reading about 2001, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE made me want to see those films again.  In both of those instances it’s been at least 30 years since I viewed them so this book got me interesting in viewing them again.

If you’ve ever read a Taschen book, you know that they are put together with super high quality on every level.  This book on Stanley Kubrick continues that level of beautiful craftsmanship about one of the important directors in cinema history.
