Trick 'r Treat – Music by Douglas Pipes

La-La Land Records – 2009

Nighttime, imagine a tree lined neighborhood with lit Jack-O-Lanterns sitting on every home doorstep.  Autumn leaves fall from the trees to the street.  Wind carries the orange-brown leaves across the somewhat cold moist ground.  It's that time of year when the sky looks cloudy, dark and turbulent.

Now add orchestral music to this scene that is a couple handfuls Danny Elfman, with a pinch of Bernard Herrmann and James Newton Howard.

Douglas Pipes score for this anthology (which I haven't seen yet) is a horror score with action elements.  It's sounds as though the movie is meant to spook you a little but ultimately give you a good time and entertain you.  Pipes score accomplishes this as he keeps you on your toes mixing up beautiful sweeping classical movie themes with horror stingers and pulse pounding adrenaline fueled action composition.  The voice work with orchestra is Elfmanish.

"The Halloween Schoolbus Massacre" is one of the coolest tracks off the disc.  It reminded me as a cross between Pino Donaggio and Bernard Herrmann.

The CD is loaded with 59 minutes and 19 seconds of atmospheric music that would fit beautifully in your stereo this Halloween.  If you want to enjoy this holiday to the fullest, I'd get the TRICK 'R TREAT soundtrack to help you accomplish it.
