The 6-minutes of footage inserted into the movie are almost unnoticeable
because it amounts to more info in already a massively detailed movie.
So in other words the new footage doesn’t hurt the movie, unlike
most situations were extra footage bloats the movie with unnecessary stuff
that was cut out for good reason. ZODIAC
the movie, as well as the real life situation, is all about the specifics
so I find this fitting.
The first disc has two audio
commentaries. David Fincher speaks alone
on the first track. Fincher is
very informative talking about the genesis of the film and is honest about
himself, which I found very surprising at times.
The second is a multi-commentary featuring Jake
Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer
Brad Fischer and novelist James Ellroy.
This track is a little looser with viewpoints coming from five
different perspectives.
Zodiac Deciphered is an
exhaustive look at the making of the movie.
I loved hearing the lengths David Fincher went to get authenticity.
When they were filming the scene at
Lake
Berryessa
, Fincher had trees flown in by helicopter because the real location had
changed since the Zodiac attacked the couple almost 40 years ago.
You got to love that kind of commitment from a director.
The Visual Effects of Zodiac is broken down in a segment all about the computer enhancement work.
Previsualization compares
split-screen comparison between animatics and the film for three murder
scenes. It’s amazing to see
how close the pre-production tool ends up versus the film.
The second disc features a feature length documentary
called This Is The Zodiac
Speaking, which is an video investigation into the Zodiac murders
with the real people involved. I
love this sort of thing as I found the reality of true crime fascinating
at the same shocking and horrifying. David
Prior has done a magnificent job of covering every aspect of the
investigation.
There is also another documentary called His
Name Was Arthur Leigh Allen, which features looks at the prime
suspect in the Zodiac case from people who knew him.
After reading the book this movie is based on, seeing the
documentaries on this disc and knowing what I already did n
Please
view my previous review of ZODIAC to hear my
take on David Fincher’s subtle masterpiece.
As far as this 2-Disc Director’s Cut.
It’s the best DVD I’ve seen this year so far.
