Boy, it’s been a long time I saw something with the qualities this film brings. ABOMINABLE was a pleasant surprise bringing back the cool exploitation aspects missing from the cinema since the glory days of New World Pictures (1970s to 1980s). The film has some gore, nudity but is made by a talented director. It reminded me of how New World Pictures served up the first work of filmmakers who have gone onto bigger things (Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Jim Cameron, Allan Arkush, Jonathan Demme). This film showcases talent behind the lens, a mix of old time recognizable actors & some fresh faces.

Preston Rogers (Matt McCoy) returns to the area where he experienced an accident, which cost him the use of his legs and his wife’s life. He’s there with the aide of his male nurse to try and overcome the fear that has set in since that tragic day. Now confined to a wheelchair he sits with nothing much to do but to face his fear and try to get a grip on his life.

But he is quickly thrust into a scary situation when a group of beautiful young twenty somethings arrive next door around the same time as large hairy humanoid creature. The conflict becomes very suspenseful as Preston Rogers sees the ABOMINABLE first, he must use all the strength and courage he can muster to face this creature and try and save the girls next door.

Ryan Schifrin does a creditable job maximizing the suspense and designing the film to play out like REAR WINDOW in a mountain cabin. The first hour is truly intense and he peppers the film with splotches of gore and nudity that will appease your carnal appetite.

The make-up design is pretty scary, especially when you don’t see it all out in the open. The scenes with the ABOMINABLE hiding in the bushes with Preston Rogers shining the flashlight beam onto it’s red eyes is frightening.

I can’t recommend this film enough. It’s the kind of film you hope for that I was use to see more often while growing up.
