Actors Turned Directors: On Eliciting the Best Performance from an Actor and Other Secrets of Successful Directing

Written by Jon Stevens
Silman-James Press, 1997
ISBN 1-879505-34-7
300 Pages, $19.95

If you want to seriously learn something about acting, this book will help you have a better understanding of what it’s all about. It is essential for a film director to know how to work with actors when making a film. It’s something that I don’t believe you can only learn by reading, but this book helped me realize and reestablish some of the little things I must be conscious of when working with actors.

Since the book focuses on interviews with actors who have become directors, you get wisdom right from the people who have done both. It’s amazing that ten totally different actors/filmmakers stress the same things that are important for an actor to elicit a good performance.

Writer Jon Stevens does a good job of asking questions that any filmmaker would be interested in knowing. It would be especially enlightening for those who have never directed a film yet. He gets answers about what a director should do concerning working with the screenwriter, casting, rehearsal, working on the set with actors, using the camera, working with an editor, music composer and marketing the film. Pretty much everything that is part of directing is discussed. Invaluable.
