Journal Of The Dead
By Jason Kersten

Perennial – 2003
ISBN – 0-06-095922-3
$12.95, 236 pages

"In the summer of 1999, best friends Raffi Kodikian and David Coughlin headed off on an American Rite of passage: a cross-country road trip. When they reached the New Mexico desert, they stopped to camp overnight in Rattlesnake Canyon. Expecting to be back on the road early the next morning, they took just three pints of water. But they lost their way in the desert. Four days later help arrived…"

Authorities found Raffi Kodikian barely alive. Kodikian freely admitted that he had stabbed Coughlin twice in the heart. Had there been a darker motive than mercy? How could anyone, under any circumstances, kill his best friend?

This is a very intriguing situation that makes you seriously question the friendship between these two guys and what actually happened. All clues seem to point that Raffi Kodikian had reasons to off his friend David Coughlin. It’s a mystery that everyone probably comes away with his or her own view of what might have took place.

I also found it astonishing that these two college young adults, who were both supposedly bright students, didn’t estimate the need for water and the danger of the desert especially at the time of year they made their pilgrimage there. This is the part of the story that really boggled my mind and I tried to put myself in the same situation thinking what I might have done.

This book is taut, moves fast and will have you contemplating all the possible scenarios.

Read it to find out for yourself.
