Coen Brothers
Written by Josh Levine

ECW Press, 2000
ISBN 1-55022-424-7
$17.95, 178 pages

Joel and Ethan Coen are original, unflinching filmmakers who have covered an incredibly diverse body of work, which is carefully looked at in this book. You may not like every film these two brothers have made, but you have to say that they’ve made the films they wanted to see, whether or not there was an audience for them.

Joel and Ethan grew up in a middle-class family in Minnesota. They were influenced by friend Sam Raimi, and have spent a lot of time on the East coast as Joel went to NYU and Ethan attended Princeton.

Josh Levine gets underneath how each of the brother’s films came together and gives his opinion of what worked in each case. The chapters on BLOOD SIMPLE, RAISING ARIZONA and FARGO were really fun for me. The films I’m most interested in seeing that I haven’t would have to be MILLER’S CROSSING, BARTON FINK and THE BIG LEBOWSKI.

After reading this book, I think I have a better understanding of what makes the Coen brothers tick. For the unacquainted, this book is a great way to be introduced to the Coen’s artistry. If you’re already a fan, don’t be caught without this book.
