Collateral – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Hip-O-Records – 2004

Tom Rothrock really sets the oppressive mood of the brilliant thriller COLLATERAL with "Briefcase." This little cue is crafted with creative use of guitar and keyboard. "The Seed" lightens things up a bit with the pop hip-hop feel of The Roots featuring Cody ChesnuTT. Groove Armada’s tune "Hands Of Time" really ease things up and feel retro.
"Calexico" is a festive track that represents the Spanish feel of Los Angeles. Composer Tom Rothrock brings a southern, slide guitar touch to "Rollin’ Crumblin." James Newton Howard uses rock guitar and drums in a cinematic way to create "Max Steals Briefcase." The Green Car Motel contributes a likable little Spanish ballad called "Destino de Abril."
"Shadow On The Sun" is a powerhouse track by Audioslave. People have been mentioning this band to me for quite some time and now that I have heard their music I understand all the fuss. The song goes from atmospheric little tune to full-blown rocker. Great stuff.

There is a Miles Davis tune "Spanish Key" which is tremendously energetic and invigorating to listen to. Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion turn down the lights and give us a chance to breathe some "Air." This of course is the calm before the storm.

"Ready Steady Go (remix)" by Oakenfold is a spectacular dance beat track that is used for the shootout in the Korean club in the film. This multi-dimensional track is perfect to ride the energy and complexity of this amazing scene.

I can hear why Antonio Pinto won the Discovery Of The Year Award for the 2003 World Soundtrack awards. He is gifted at taking the little moments "Car Crash" that mean so much and filling them with subtle emotional power "Requiem". Don’t be surprised to hear Antonio Pinto’s name in the future.

James Newton Howard brings real powerful drums and percussion to "Vincent Hops Train" and "Finale." I love the moody soft guitar in the beginning of "Finale."

The songs are perfect for the film, Michael Mann is a true master of connecting music with film/television but it’s the score elements contributed by the different composers that really stand out. I didn’t know Tom Rothrock, Antonio Pinto or Oakenfold before this, but now I will seek their music out. COLLATERAL is incredibly diverse and satisfying experience.
