The intro featuring Godsmack's
"Voodoo" grabbed hold of me, and never let go throughout this
thriller of consequence. Hector (Brad Hunt), and Dorena (Cyia Batten),
plan to use an abandoned farmhouse as a lab to cook up batches of Crystal
Meth, get rich, and settle elsewhere. The problem is, the more they make,
the more they take. The more they take, the more the house takes over; the
house being the site of the bizarre disappearance of a little girl, many
years back. The movie, mainly a dialogue between Hector and Dorena, also
features a main role of Merle (Patrick McGaw), the pair's, clumsy,
mulleted, motorhead, go to guy.
This is a psychological thriller that will easily unnerve you, and go to
work on your senses. Brad Hunt deserves an Oscar for his role as a
convincing speed freak who tweaks, shakes, convulses, and hallucinates.
Cyia Batton easily deserves Best Supporting Actress as a more levelheaded
addict, the cooker. Eventually, she too gets caught up in the mayhem of
drug addiction, as the entities begin to take over her mind as well. As
the climax begins to unravel into a brief battle scene, the secret of the
past is revealed. Could it be reincarnation? Blocked out past? You decide!
"Cookers" is one of the most enjoyable horror movies of this
decade! An extremely enjoyable, edge of your seat 90 minutes delve into
dementia! Bring plenty of popcorn, and don't watch "Cookers"
alone! There are plenty of hidden metaphors, and buried symbols
throughout, so keep a sharp eye focused. This one hits a bull's-eye!
