Cry Wolf – Score by Michael Wandmacher

Lakeshore Records – 2005

This score took me totally by surprise.  It’s wonderfully dark, atmospheric and cool.  It’s not often that a score has a feel that is modern, classic, electronic and engineers warmth with terror.  Michael Wandmacher accomplishes this and then some.

CRY WOLF music kicks it right from the first track “Her Last Breath.”  Swirling percussive elements drive Michael Wandmacher’s music.

A clanging bell-like keyboard hit in combo with soft piano, dark electronic moans and high-end strings make “Main Title” fun.

In “Owen’s Theme/First IM” a beautiful violin flows like leaves falling from trees during the autumn.

“The Missing Backpack” is totally mysterious.  The eighth track has an inquisitive smooth rhythm that hugs darkness.

There is some real groovy suspense scoring in “Evasive Maneuvers.”  Drums put us into a chase with racing electronic sounds hitting all around, while strings stay scary.

“Dead Man Walking” has a soft groove, yet remains dark and feels somewhat tragic.  This eighteenth track features one of the other main themes in CRY WOLF.

In “Run Like Hell” you will feel like your in the chase of your life and love every second of it.  Wandmacher meant it when he named this track.

“Fallout” is a beautiful mesh of the main theme played out slowly on piano.  This cue made me feel complete and brings the story full circle.

Michael Wandmacher wraps up all his main themes in “Epilogue.”  This last track has a skipping drum beat, it’s warm and fun, with a tinge of the horror that proceeds it.

CRY WOLF score is one of the most listenable CDs I’ve heard in the past two years and more than encourage you to check it out.
