Dark Eye The Films of David Fincher Written by James Swallow Reynolds & Hearn/Trafalgar Square Publishing |
|
| Over the past decade David Fincher has brought
his unique interests and visual style to five feature films. Writer James Swallow takes a
look at Finchers work in this solid filmmaker book. ALIEN 3, SEVEN, THE GAME, FIGHT CLUB and PANIC ROOM all get individual chapters. Besides Swallows insightful overview of each film synopsis, Swallow details each production and then mentions the cuts that were made prior to production as well as describing any footage not used in the final movie. Swallow goes back to Finchers beginning to tell the story of how Fincher became a director. Growing up just north of San Francisco, David Fincher literally lived next door to George Lucas. Fincher ended up working at Industrial Light & Magic but it really wasnt because he was Lucas neighbor. Swallow then covers Finchers work in music videos, commercials before tackling each feature film. The last chapter is about all of the projects that Fincher has on the table for future films as well as the films he has been linked to at some time. I found this chapter intriguing, especially learning the diversity of the different kinds of films he wants to make. After hearing David Fincher speak, there is no doubt about his passion for the cinema. He takes on projects that are not easily made (though he initially thought PANIC ROOM would be a simple shoot) and after seeing the results of his work so far; I have to admire him for his skill and ambition. James Swallow has interviewed Fincher on numerous occasions and brings the collection of his responses together in this superb book. |
