Dawn of the Dead – Music by Tyler Bates

Tyler Bates takes the familiar heartbeat percussion effect from the original DAWN score and updates it with brutal, massive modern orchestration. "Brainscan" sets the huge ambient tone of this scary soundtrack. The percussion bites as "Vivian Attacks." Brass screams and metallic percussion clangs. The arcing low brass growls in the back, it’s like multiple layers of danger.

The muted low volume of the orchestra explodes as "Louis Blasts Through The Bathroom Door." I love the echoed hit rhythm of "Anna’s Escape." The orchestra really grows into something large and magnificent before this track ends.

"We Going To The Mall" is quietly subdued which continues into "Scoping Out Metropolis." The high piano note in "Michael Investigates" is very creepy. The unsteady brass that opens "Zombie Spike" sets you up for the powerful strikes of the orchestra.

I got totally caught into the groove of "We Need To Suture That Arm." The horrific elements are all around the track but the beat is dreamy and catchy. "Don’t Give Him That Gun" is sullen and thought provoking. The clarinet in "America Always sorts Its Shit Out" brings a touch of warmth to DOTD.

"Ben Cozine" swells until it is about to pop. You can hear the influence of Elliot Goldenthal’s ALIEN 3 sound in "Maybe They’re Coming For Us." The high synthesizer part in "How Do You Think Your God Will Judge You?" floats over the track like a ghost.

You can feel the tension of the situation of "I Hope You Got A Good Plan." Tyler Bates is able to bring the audio presence of the zombies in "Truck Over Zombies." The deep brass is snarling in the back, while the other parts of orchestra builds to the action of the scene. The high low compositional sound elements of "Blood Bath City" really balance out the sound.

You can tell "It’s Only A Matter Of Time" before Bates will bring the fury of his orchestra. The nineteenth track has a little melody sunk in what the dark future will bring. Bates does an awesome job of having the orchestra reinforce the piano lines. This is really cool to listen to.

Tyler Bates intense composition makes you feel scared to "Breathe." The way the orchestra lays coiled ready to strike makes you fear to even exhale.

"That Dog’s Just Fucked Up" is relentless juggernaught of growling, pounding orchestra building to a crescendo. The airspace swirls before the low thumping instrument carries in drums and a spider web of instrumentation.

Prepared to get flattened by the percussive force of "Luda’s Transformation." The echoed drums, screeching high pitch noise and hammering on piano keys are pretty darn intense.

The mood goes from grim to black in "You Wanna Kill My Family?" A metallic sound comes out of nowhere to slice right through your ears. All the while a constant turning deep machine like noise chugs underneath.

"The Hangman’s Song" is a short rock tune with Tyler Bates on guitar. "We Need To Do Something…Now!" has an urgent somberness to it. The music gives the feeling that no matter what the people do, there will be no escape from the zombies.

"I’m Not A Plumber" is pretty subdued until after the two-minute mark, where Bates has his orchestra get wicked. "Subterranean Sewer Attack" is action music packing a horrific punch. Tyler Bates continues to adrenalize the composition in "Sailing The Sea Of Zombies."

You almost cringe at the hair-raising instrumentation of "Chainsaw To The Breast Bone." Sharp metallic sounds tear and slice through the air as low percussion builds. The swerving synthesizer in "Fuckin’ Figures" climbs with the percussion to a plateau of terror.

Tyler Bates eases the horror and terror of DAWN OF THE DEAD into grim somberness of the last track "Enjoy The Sunrise."

This is pure dynamite of a horror movie soundtrack that is a must for any fan of terrific film scoring and scary movies.
