Def Leppard
Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection Island 2005 |
|
| This album is
categorically the definitive Def Leppard collection, especially when you compare it to
Vault, which was released ten years ago. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" has been a radio staple since it first hit the airwaves back in 1987. The loud cracking electronic reinforced drumbeat, which must have been designed to help Rick Allens one armed drumming, is so distinct that it meshes with the hypnotic chorus and Joe Elliots unmistakable vocals. "Photograph" is a great choice for the second song on this CD because though it may not be as popular as the first track, it is the song that broke Def Leppard to a mass audience. "Love Bites" came from longtime Leppard producer Mutt Lange and ended up being the first number one single for the band. The hypnotic soft guitar rhythm is really special and stays with you long after the song is over. "Lets Get Rocked" must be a blast for the band to perform because the track sounds fun in its studio form. Its got the sound that could best be described as Def Leppards trademark sound. An acoustic version of "Two Steps Behind" is the fifth track on the first CD and is a ballad that embraces and strengthens romance. Phil Collen and Steve Clarks guitars energetically drive "Animal." This song was the first hit for the band in their homeland. Its amazing that it took the band ten years of playing and three albums to accomplish that. They accomplished it faster in the USA. Parts of "Heaven Is" were incorporated into "Armageddon It." Joe Elliot admits that the background vocals sounded like the Beach Boys, which was the first time the band went that far. Ive always loved the dark chords of "Foolin." The bridge "Is there anybody out there?" works every time I hear this song. Its too bad that the band doesnt often delve into the atmospherics of this song because they are really good at it when they play this style. The background vocals of "Rocket" are classic and powerful. The guitar distortion tone stands out with the background vocals. "When Love & Hate Collide" is the type of ballad you would expect from Leppard but still has emotional impact never the less. "Armageddon It" is kind of a silly title and a harmless little pop rock tune. The chorus is pretty addictive. You cant but sing along with "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad." Anyone whos been in love or had a crush on someone (which probably is everyone) can recall the feeling while listening to this song. Phil Collen says in the linear notes "Rock Of Ages" takes him back to getting mobbed and jumped by girls during the Pyromania era. The guitar interplay of "Hysteria" between Phil Collen and Steve Clark is perfectly complementary of Joe Elliots lead vocals. Joe Elliot says there are eleven different guitar parts glued together within the track. "Miss You in a Heartbeat" is the first Leppard song to feature piano. Joe Elliot says whenever they perform this song live he always thinks of when Phil Collen sung the lead vocal. Rick Savage said that "Bringing on the Heartbreak" almost didnt make the High N Dry album because it was a ballad. This song was the first track to start to attract a mass audience for the band. I personally feel that the sound of this track is really what took the band into the direction of Pyromania. "Switch 625" is really a continuation of "Bringing on the Heartbreak" and came from the genius of the late Steve Clark. "Rock Rock (Till You Drop)" begins the second CD. Rick Allen admits that this is one of the most challenging songs to perform since losing his arm. For me, High N Dry is still my favorite Def Leppard album and "Let It Go" is one of the songs that absolutely rocks on that decisive second album. I love the part where the band slows down 2 ½ minutes into the song. The opening riff of "High N Dry (Saturday Night)" which was created by former guitarist Pete Willis really kicks with Rick Allens drums. The stormy opening with the dark guitar chords set the mood for "Too Late For Love." This is an aspect of Def Leppard that I miss in later recordings. "No Matter" is a newly recorded song that will be on the upcoming Covers album. Phil Collen says its 70s song that perfectly balances pop and rock. It also gives you an idea of where the bands inspiration came from, in this case Badfinger. After the band experimented with Slang they felt they needed to return to the sound they perfected on Pyromania and Hysteria. "Promises" was the song that captured this return on the Euphoria album. "Mirror Mirror (Look Into My Eyes)" features the dark heavy tinge of High N Dry" album. The two guitars working together and split off at other times which is really cool. Joe Elliot admits that the band wanted spooky lyrics for a spooky song. The muted screaming guitar in the intro of "Women" probably best captures the sound that has become now trademark Def Leppard. The band couldnt pick a better song to ever open a concert because of the way the song builds and projects Def Leppards strengths. Rick Allen said this song was one of the first he played on after the accident and was appreciative that the drumming didnt need to be too frantic. "Another Hit and Run" is my favorite Leppard song of all-time. It makes me recall my sophomore year in high school and particularly of seeing HALLOWEEN II. Its not surprising I like it so much because it is dark and it rocks. I love the interplay between guitar, bass and the parts showcasing Rick Allens cymbal work. This is a tune that feels like the autumn season but maybe thats because I listened to it a lot in the fall of 1981. "Slang" has aged well over time. Phil Collen says the song is about phone sex. When the album first came out it made people take a step back because it was so different compared what people had been accustom to from Def Leppard. For my money there is one song off that album "Blood Runs Cold" that is one of the bands hidden gems. Phil Collen says the band didnt include "Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)" because it was too similar to "Hysteria." He goes on to say that Bob Dylan said you only write five songs in your life. The rest are just variations of those songs. Enough said. Joe Elliot says that when they wrote "Rock Brigade" he liked the idea of a gang being lead forward like Thin Lizzy did with "The Boys Are Back In Town." "Now" was off the X album and is something that really grows on you. Vivian Campbell says that the band wrote "Paper Sun" in response to Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland while they were in the studio working on Euphoria. Vivian Campbell says that doing Slang was very difficult for him because of the major shift in the bands sound. "Work It Out" was one of the songs he brought to the table and it got onto the album untouched because it was the closest thing to something hooky. Phil Collen says that Steve Clark was the biggest Jimmy Page fan on the planet. "Die Hard The Hunter" was one of the tracks influenced by Led Zeppelin though you wouldnt necessarily notice it because they never carbon copied their influences. The guitar riff of "Wasted" is thick and tasty. Joe Elliot says he was 18 years old when he sang this song in third person because at that point he had never taken a drug and barely had a drink. "Billys Got A Gun" is a nice way for the band to go out on a high note on this 2-CD set. One of the many outstanding songs off Pyromania. This 2-CD set is a must for anyone who appreciates rock music. |
