G3: Live in Denver

Epic – 2004

The October 20, 2003 show at the Filmore Auditorium, Denver, Colorado is captured beautifully on this DVD. This DVD boosts magnificent clear photography and outstanding audio equaling up to a DVD every music fan should own.

Joe Satriani performs five of his signature songs; "Satch Boogie", "The Extremist", "Starry Night", "Midnight" and "The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing." Joe does these tunes in his own cool way. Though Satch plays incredibly challenging technique, this DVD goes to show that for Joe, it’s always about the song and pleasing his massive audience.

I was floored with the way Steve Vai opens his set with "I Know You're Here." He comes out with a triple neck guitar and plays an absolutely stunning performance alternating between all three-guitar necks at the same time. It’s thrilling to watch and you can’t help but be impressed with how easy Vai makes it look. Vai also plays "Juice" and "I'm the Hell Outta Here."

It’s good to see Yngwie Malmsteen part of this show and get some attention. The guy may not have made many fans with the way he spoke to people back in the late 80s/early 90s but the fact is Malmsteen changed guitar playing after he hit the scene. Malmsteen performs "Evil Eye", "Baroque and Roll", Acoustic Guitar Solo, "Adagio" and "Far Beyond the Sun." Yngwie plays with such amazing fluid speed that you have to watch with some degree of amazement. It astonishes me that he can still do it today, twenty years later. It was also kind of surprising to see him sing and I think he will gain a bunch of new fans from this tour & DVD.

As is always the tradition of a G3 show, all three players get together and play three improvisational jam songs; "Rockin' in the Free World" and two Jimi Hendrix songs "Little Wing" and Voodoo Child (Slight Return)." This is a real treat as each guy takes multiple turns to solo and trade off with each other. It's here that you discern each player's approach and it's thrilling to watch this high level of guitar playing. I also think it's cool that these three
players (along with other G3 line-ups) prove that they can co-exist in the same environment and not make it a
competition to outdo each other. You can clearly see the respect and admiration they have for one another and that is something other people could learn from.

The DVD supplements include a "Fretcam feature" (you will never get closer to the guitar strings), biographies of each player, day of show itinerary/personnel list and lighting plot diagram.

You don’t have to be a hard rock, metal or even guitar fan to appreciate this DVD.
