It’s not often you find a good film in the super low/micro budget world of horror, but GHOST OF THE NEEDLE is an exception. Made with the right focus and tonality, GHOST OF THE NEEDLE will surprise you and keep you watching for its entire 86 minutes.
This is a story about a photographer (Jacob) who works out of a studio in the basement of an old factory. He brings attractive female subjects down into his liar with no intention of ever letting them leave alive. He has a fascination of photographing them once their dead. It’s an odd fetish and something that works well in a horror film.
The majority of the film takes place in a factory that reminded me a little of interior of Danvers State Insane Asylum, used in the wonderful SESSION 9. Filmed in Georgia GHOST OF THE NEEDLE has unique locations that are photographed with a real professional touch. Some of the suspense moments in the factory are as good as any film out there. The way Brian Avenet-Bradley directed this film, you don’t know for sure if Jacob is seeing ghosts or if it’s just his disturbed mind working overtime. That is a real achievement and something he should be proud of.
This film strength lies in the creepiness of the factory, the focus on suspense and the execution of moody cinematography and photography. The black & white photos Jacob has hanging in his studio, which were shot by Laurence Avenet-Bradley are breathtaking. I would also mention the music score from Mark Lee Fletcher. Fletcher keeps ambience up which puts you on the edge of your seat. The acting and dialogue is somewhat inconsistent and probably the two aspects that hurt the film.
This is a strong production and shows off key talented people. I would love to see what these filmmakers do next.
