Hammock – Kenotic
Hammock Music - 2004
"Before The Celebration" ushers in a sweeping trail of ambience that picks you up and takes you into this beautiful moody album. Guitar strings are a nice surprise in "Blankets Of Night" and bring a real human musical element to the feel of the music. The guitars are played with a southern sliding, country rock feel and are emotionally potent. The soft female vocals, which are almost like a whisper, really added flavor to this second track.

"Dawn Begins To Creep" is made up of a bunch of little sounds that blend together to give the impression of the sun lifting up into the sky as a day begins.

"Kenotic" is one of my favorite tracks off this absorbing album. Atmospheric guitars fall into a gentle groove with the percussion that makes you feel like you are having the time of your life one beautiful summer afternoon. The coordination of all the instrumentation working together is masterful.

Keyboards and little bells make you feel like you are in a dream during "Miles To Go Before Sleep." There seems to be high-pitched guitar parts mixed within this track that are not obvious when listening to it.

Hammock musically establishes "Overcast/Sorrow" with haunting ease. I loved when the percussion comes in to give the track a little push. The instrumentation is ghostly and evokes peace.

The higher pitched flute/keyboard sound in "Rising Tide" is unforgettable. It works perfectly sitting on top of the rest of Hammock’s ambience. The use of guitars and musical feel of "Stars In The Rearview Mirror" reminded me of the excellent score BT created for MONSTER.

"The Air Between Us" takes the guitar part established earlier in the album and puts it more in the forefront to lead into a nice catchy tune. Where as the guitar in "The Silence" is more like the soft touch of a gentle breeze.

Kenotic has become one of my most listened to CDs. It has the power to make you feel good and serves as a catalyst when wanting to do something creative.
