House Of Wax – Music by John Ottman Varese Sarabande – 2005

Grand, majestic and thrilling would be the best way to describe John Ottman’s score for HOUSE OF WAX. Ottman matches the richness of the small town seen in the movie with colorful film music. I credit Ottman’s score for making the film as good as it is and definitely why it’s suspenseful. The main themes he uses circle around from being sweet and regal to becoming horrific as the film races to the climax. Ottman uses choir voices softly at times and in other cues uses the voices as an instrument to push the rhythm. The tracks that standout with Ottman’s melodic compositional touch are “Opening / Tantrum” with choir use that would make Jerry Goldsmith proud and the organ performance in “Endless Service.” In “Hanging With Baby Jane” the piccolos & flutes are pretty darn scary to listen to. The low choir voices in “Ritual / Escape From Church” are unique. Ottman has the choir double up with brass in “Up In Flames.” In “Paris Gets It” brass, strings, percussion, electronic hissing work together as a machine to generate full-blown intensity. “Curiosity Kills” and “Bringing Down The House” combine elegance and terror with equal impression.
