Joe Satriani – Is There Love In Space?
Epic – 2004

Mr. Consistency is what I’d call Joe Satriani. IS THERE LOVE IN SPACE? is a CD that would give any rock fan satisfaction. It’s groove oriented with a jam feel that Satriani has strived for since THE EXTREMIST.

"Gnaahh" has the cosmic guitar touches that are signature Satriani. "Up In Flames" rocks along with bass work from Matt Bissonette and Jeff Campitelli’s drums. It’s no coincidence that this song actually reminds me at times of "The Extremist" as Bissonette was one half of the foundation for that earlier track.

"Lifestyle" puts Satriani back on the microphone for vocals. The opening riff is fun and leads to a perfect place for Joe to rip out a beautiful solo. Joe slows down to bring "Is There Love In Space?" The tonality of this tune is quite delightful and will captivate you. I can already imagine a concert crowd enjoying this while they catch their breath between the harder driving songs.

Satriani lifts us up with "If I Could Fly." Your feet won’t touch the ground while listening this tune. I love the wah-wah feedback of "The Souls of Distortion." Joe rips off into the heavens in this seventh track, which is one of my favorite tracks on the album.

Satch cools down in "Just Look Up." "I Like The Rain" has the shades of Joe’s older song "Strange" with a vibe best described as the comical side of Van Halen with David Lee Roth.

I really like it when Satch explorers the realms of the guitar and he does just that with the ten minute "Searching." He takes off the normal restraints of commercial songwriting to delve into the wide-open arena of experimentation. Some of the riffs are song oriented but the length and song structure leave a lot of room for creativity. Another one of my favorite tracks on the CD.

Satriani finishes strong as he plays amazing layers of guitar in "Bamboo." The deep blending rhythm is highlighted with spastic, almost insanely cool high-pitched guitar crying out. This is Satriani in FLYING THROUGH A BLUE DREAM mode. In other words, he is at his best playing with the same kind of amazing creative impulse he had on that groundbreaking CD.
