John Carpenter The Prince of
Darkness Written by Gillis Boulenger Silman-James Press, 2003 ISBN #1-879505-67-3 $19.95, 296 pages |
|
| This book is a must for anyone who appreciates
the work of John Carpenter. Its artfully put together. Slick cover, inner content
printed on glossy paper, 24 color pages of photos, its a book that is visually
stunning. Chapters are laid out in chronological order of each film John Carpenter has
made. The best part however, is that Gillis Boulenger has interviewed John Carpenter in
person & by fax from 1997- 2001 and was able to gather the most comprehensive
responses from John Carpenter Ive seen. Life long John Carpenter friend Tommy Lee Wallace kicks the book off with a foreword that gives real insight into who John Carpenter is. He would certainly know having grown up from the same neighborhood and working with him professional for over twenty years. Its nice to hear how truthful Wallace is about Carpenter, admitting that they had a falling out for a period of time but have since patched up their differences. Im pretty sure most of you will find new info about the films of John Carpenter that you probably didnt know. For example, I never knew Tom Cruise was initially considered to play STARMAN. Ive followed Carpenters career closely since HALLOWEEN so things like this surprised me about this book. Whether you are a true fan of John Carpenter, an aspiring filmmaker or common fan, you should read this book.
