Kino Delirium.jpg (4367 bytes) Kino Delirium – The Films of Guy Maddin
Written by Caelum Vatnsdal

Arbeiter Ring Publishing – 2000
ISBN 1-894037-11-1
$17.95, 176 pages

I’ve never seen any of Guy Maddin’s films. From reading this book I’d say that his films are probably an acquired taste or that you have one of his eccentric interests. Caelum Vatnsdal does a good job of covering Maddin’s entire career and what Maddin wanted to accomplish with each of his productions. It’s not the cut and dry stuff you normally read about in literature of filmmaking and some ways makes it a more difficult read.

Maddin has a fascination with films from the silent era as well as the films when sound was first introduced. He uses those historic techniques and even tries to use the same equipment to make his films look like they came from time he is so passionate about. This makes him a unique filmmaker and I haven’t had the chance to see one of his films yet.

Vatnsdal has done a terrific job of putting together photos, criticism (including the mass public’s perception of his work, including Canada) to give you the true idea of what the world thinks of Maddin’s films. Vatnsdal conducts an interview with Guy Maddin that illuminates how the distinct and odd filmmaker thinks.
