Music by Iva Davies, Christopher Gordon & Richard Tognetti

Decca Records –2003

MASTER AND COMMANDER is a wonderful marriage of contemporary film scoring music and old world classical. Director Peter Weir has the reputation of a filmmaker who uses music to inspire him while working and the score to MASTER AND COMMANDER reflects what he listened to while making this film.

All the original score music in the film was composed by Iva Davies, Christopher Gordon and Richard Tognetti. Defined in the linear notes; Iva Davies handled the digital, synthesizer and sample programming, while the score was orchestrated and conducted by Christopher Gordon and Richard Tognetti. As a team these three guys fuse the old and new sound together so that anyone could appreciate it.

"The Far Side of the World" begins with powerful, deep percussive sounds that reminded me of the quality that James Newton Howard gave WATERWORLD. "Into The Fog" is along these lines also and it’s amazing how this music makes you think of a precursor to the intense ship battle scenes.

It was a lot of fun to hear Mozart’s "Violin Concerto No. 3 K216, 3rd Movement." This track is a celebratory dance of violin and flute. Yo-Yo Ma does a mesmerizing Cello performance of J.S. Bach’s "Prelude from the Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007."

The sustained single notes that ring out and build "The Phasmid" put you on the edge of your seat. You wouldn’t think something so simple could affect you so much.

Boccherini’s "La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid No. 6, OP. 30" is pure relaxation and brought me to a peaceful state of serenity.

This is a classy soundtrack that will inspire you to play often because it brings joy.
