Melanie Mitrano – Songs in Transit: An American Expedition

Capstone Records – 2006

Melanie Mitrano is gifted with a spectacular soprano voice that soars with dramatic range and technique.  In songs like “Saying Goodbye,” “How To Get Heat Without Fire” and “New Year’s Eve” she is comfortable in operatic fashion.  In other tunes she sings like a siren on the Broadway stage.

Melanie makes it sound so easy in “Why I Wear my Hair Long” and “The Hour.”  Her voice is so controlled yet incredibly expressive at the same time.

Mitrano is in theatrical mode during “The Pocketbook,” “Money,” “Manners” and “I Could Call You Up.”  You can hear she really enjoys the playfulness of these tunes.

A part of “Filling Station” Mitrano literally fills up the audio space with her heavenly voice.

“Insomnia” would not describe how Melanie’s voice makes you feel while listening to the 9th track.  She makes you feel so at ease that you could literally close your eyes and fall asleep.

“Perirrhanterium (Truth)” is my favorite track on the CD.  Mitrano performs multiple layers with her voice, which is backed by a deep percussion background.  Most of the CD features just piano providing music but her voice would standout within any musical setting.

I’d be curious to hear Mitrano sing in a couple other musical environments.  I could totally envision her voice in a heavy progressive metal setting and as she already proved with her vocal work in the soundtrack for PERFUME, she’s perfect for movie scores.

This fifty-five minute CD would be excellent choice for anyone who appreciates stellar vocals and exceptional music ability.
