Midnight Syndicate – The 13th Hour

Linfaldia Records – 2005

‘The 13th Hour’ is the return of the masters of Gothic horror music Midnight Syndicate (MS). Edward Douglas & Gavin Goszka have composed twenty-five tracks that are sure to bring you Halloween fun. It’s no surprise that MS is the chosen music for numerous haunted houses and Halloween type set-ups. Their music is sinister, lively and entertaining.

I will list my favorite tracks off the album and why I like them. "Mansion in the Mist" which is more subtle and ambient than the average MS track. In "The Drawing Room" the off kilter piano sound with whispery backing is definitely eerie. "Mausoleum d’ Haverghast" features MS’s signature sound of clanging bells and haunting voices crying gloom. The little keyboard taps of "Footsteps in the Dust" are chilling. I like the echoed note effect in "Veiled Hunter." "Grisly Reminder" has a real menace about it.

Midnight Syndicate has perfected their sound for this type of music. The thing I’d like to hear is the band branch out into new musical directions still focusing on horror but broadening their soundscape.

I’d like to see the band use more open space, less themes and not always needing to create harmony. Themes usually bring melody, which is good for people to enjoy most music, but lately I’ve found ambience and the use of wide musical space to be less predictable and more frightening.

Don’t get me wrong, MS does what they do very well, it’s just that I think that there is more musical ground to cover. Especially when you consider the massive musical area that has not been touched by Midnight Syndicate’s ghostly composition.
