Midnight Syndicate – Carnival Arcane

Linfaldia Records – 2011

Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka (a.k.a. Midnight Syndicate) let us experience the historic Lancaster-Rigby Carnival.  A macabre, traveling fair that pulls into town to shock and spook you with wondrous delight.

The band captures historical accuracy with their choice of sound effects and even instrumental sounds.  This 14th album easily boosts the richest sound design the band has created so far.

You are welcomed into this weird and unusual world with "Mesonoxian Visitors."  You almost feel like you are on one of the rides while listening to "Canvas Wonderland."

My imagination ran wild while listening to "A Strange Menagerie."  The track conjures imagery of all sorts of odd people and animals starring in Carnival Arcane.

The bouncing piano sound at the beginning of "Agent of Fortune" is cool.  This cue is kind of mysterious like a spy looking for someone and the synth strings sweep through the darkness looking...

"Alura The Snake Lady" has an exotic instrumentation quality the represents the serpentine representation of the title character.  The drums and percussion also highlight the reptilian name sake.

One can visualize people speaking and talking about the "Arcane Wonders" on display.  The little bells and softer composition helps achieve this.

"Under The Big Top" has almost the feel of the Civil War at the start.  Then it goes into a wild assortment of entertaining directions that will bring you a smile.

The music for "Freak show" is surprisingly mellow and subdued.  You can definitely feel the presence of the circus in "Carousel Ride."  The ride gets more and more dangerous as it spins to the explosive climax.

"Revelation" contains the familiar sound Midnight Syndicate fans have grown to love.  Evil laughs torment "Goons and Greasepaint" like sinister clowns surfacing from the shadows.

"Kiddieland" is haunting with ghostly laughing from children and spooky cries.  The la-la-la child voice is creepy and cool.

"Krellsig's Kastle of Fun" sounds like it would be a blast for any fan of horror but terrifying for everyone else.

The main melody of "Diversions in the Dark" creeps along like a spider in a web.  The musical pace is stepped up a notch for exploring "Twisted Labyrinth."

Wicked musical reflections bounce off "Cheval Glass."  The clacking sound in "Sea of Laughter" helps give you footing while floating through a dizzying madness of cackles.

Things get serious in "Lights Out."  You just sense if you don't get away from the carnival, you time will come to an end.

If you survive the visit from the Carnival Arcade, you should feel lucky to have got away with your life.

Another fun-filled audio adventure from the dynamic spooky duo called Midnight Syndicate.
