The Passion Of The Christ Music by
John Debney Sony Music/Integrity Music 2004 |
|
| John Debney has created a score that delivers on
every level and exceeds my high expectations. I knew the music would be good because of
Mel Gibsons track record as a director; he had good scores from James Horner in THE
MAN WITHOUT A FACE and BRAVEHEART. Debney is completely inspired as he grabs elements from world music, eastern culture, choir, grand orchestra and todays powerful electronic sound. Listening to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST will literally pick you off your feet and lift you up. Debney covers the spectrum of emotion this story brings. You will feel love, spiritual ideal and the brutality that ensues. I still havent seen the film but you get that through this astounding score. This is the best score Ive heard so far this year. Debney should already be considered as the favorite for an Academy Award next year. What I like most about THE PASSION OF CHRIST score is that its not light and melodramatic fluff. Debney underlines the darker aspects to bring to light the awful truth of what happens. None of it is glossed with a sugar coating. I felt the power of situations like the massive awesome drums in "Jesus Is Carried Down" and "Resurrection" as two examples. This was definitely not a film that carried light responsibility from the music composer. Not only did he have to back the film and but John Debney knew way in advance that he was going to have to face the critical world with his choices. All I can say is brilliant work! |
