Perfume – The Story Of A Murderer
Berliner Philarmoniker – Sir Simon Rattle
EMI Classics - 2006
Right from the beginning PERFUME – THE STORY OF A MURDERER sets a tone of absolutely stunningly beautiful film music. "Prologue – The Highest Point" is dramatic with haunting choir voices leading the way for the orchestra. There has a heavy emphasis on tragedy and the promise that something unpleasant will happen. Sir Simon Rattle’s music for this track is classic and deeply emotional.

I love the way the brass is used to underline "Streets of Paris," mixed with the building rhythm that drives this cue. The many orchestral layers between the upper and lower registry are wonderfully designed. The mix is sensational with the harp and woodwinds spotlighted.

Wow! The subtle female voice that unites with the instrumentation of "The Girl with the Plums" is haunting to say the least. Parts of this 3rd cut reminded me subtly of Ennio Morricone’s music for THE THING. The breath-like sound mixed in the middle is pretty creepy. Chen Reiss’ soprano vocals in this track blend almost perfectly with the instruments. Powerful stuff.

The orchestra begins softly suspenseful in "Grenouille’s Childhood" with a gentle heartbeat rhythm beating with the flutes soaring all around and strings at a high pitch. This combination is incredibly intense and wondrous at the same time. The harp gives it a touch of magic and dreaminess.

Chen Reiss’ solo vocal in "Meeting Laura" is angelic and evokes strong emotion.

Battle masterfully constructs the brooding underside of his orchestra with dark bass instruments, a clock ticking percussion and choir voices coming in and out of the composition. Melanie Mitrano soprano voice subltly soars with the strings. Remarkable.

Explosive brass and strings are mixed with the low voice of the choir to present "Grasse in Panic." Tom Tykwer, Johnny Limek, Reinhold Heil supply the incredible electronics in this cue.

Sweeping strings charge forward in "Riches’s Escape, while a flute softly plays and a bass drum punctuates what is happening in the film at this time. Sir Simon Rattle unleashes the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra and this is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

Melanie Mitrano’s dynamic voice brings vitality to "Perfume." Sir Simon Rattle leads his orchestra to the summit in "Perfume – Distailled" and as we reach the peak with this CD, your hair will stand on end and you’ll feel the tingles this breathtaking score generates. The State Choir Latvia helps escort us out of this soundtrack with "Epilogue – Leaving Grasse." I have yet to see this film as of the time I’m writing this review. I want to see it bad because of this wonderful soundtrack and Tom Tykwer is one of the filmmakers I most admire. I can already imagine the power this score gives in supporting the film.

Running just over 70 minutes, PERFUME – THE STORY OF A MURDERER is easily one of the most superb CDs I’ve heard this year and adore its ability to hauntingly touch my heart and mind.
