Poison – Poison’D!

Capital Records – 2007

LA’s bad boys of pop metal return with 13 tracks covering bands and songs that inspired them.  True to the history of these guys having fun, the tunes selected run the gamut of popular music.

“Little Willy” seems somewhat juvenile for a hard rock band with members over 40 years old but fits perfectly with Poison’s approach.  Poison rockifies David Bowie’s “Suffragette City.”  Things wind down for a bit for the mellow Alice Cooper tune “I Never Cry.”

One of the most rocking tunes off this disc is surprisingly Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “I Need To Know.”  The band kicks up the energy level and all three band members behind Bret Michaels add their vocals to make it an anthem.

Bret Michaels nails The Marshall Tucker Band tune “Can’t You See.”  Michaels tells the story with character and the band adds the necessary musicality.

The band couldn’t have picked a better song to cover than The Romantics “What I Like About You.”  CC Deville plays the familiar riff with zeal and Bret Michaels exchanges a jamming solo on Harmonica with CC. Like being at a fun-filled party, the band celebrates life performing this track.

CC metalizes The Cars riff in “Just What I Needed.”  Poison easily covers this song with authority.

“Rock ‘N Roll All Night” is another perfect song for Poison to play.  It’s like a big bash with the energy & fun that Kiss created reincarnated.

Poison playfully renders The Who’s “Squeeze Box.”  The band’s version of Jim Croce’s “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” sounds almost live with all the vocals within the mix.

“We’re An American Band” almost says it all about Poison.

POISON’D! Is 43 minutes of fun for the whole family and would be a great stocking stuffer for a holiday gift.
