Poison Tour Live show review
POISON with Ratt & Vains of Jenna @ Nikon Theater At Jones Beach – Wantagh, NY,
July 24, 2007

Ratt photos by Janette Pellegrini

I missed most of Vains of Jenna’s performance, only catching the last few songs. They sound like the aggressive side of Guns N Roses with punkish metal guitar approach and Axl Rose like vocals. I guess they did their job as they set the stage for Ratt.

I realized a day after this concert that it had been 24 years since I last saw Ratt play live. That was 1983, when I saw them with Bon Jovi for three bucks (not a typo) and I didn’t realize how much I missed these guys.

Ratt was primed to deliver a powerful dose of "Ratt-N-Roll" and damn did it feel good hearing the wide range of songs spanning the band’s entire career. Ratt cranked out "Wanted Man," "Back For More," "Nobody Rides For Free," "Way Cool Jr." and "Lack Of Communication" never felt better.

One of my favorite parts of their set was when Warren DeMartini ripped into his wicked riff from "Lay It Down" and then purposefully stopped to get us all into the song. Once the crowd whole-heartedly shouted their desire to hear more, DeMartini kicked that nasty riff back into gear and Ratt rocked!

I’ve got to be honest with you. Ratt’s music has kind of a groovy sexy (I don’t mean erotic) vibe to it. You can’t help but sway to the guitars and killer sound. The women in the audience where going nuts and I nearly lost my voice by the end of their set because I was singing every song.

Robbie Crane (Vince Neil Band, Adler’s Appetite, Wildside among others) played bass while John Corabi (lead vocalist of The Scream, Motley Crue and Ratt) handled rhythm guitar filling in for the late Robbin Crosby.

Ratt is pretty unique is some ways because their music is fueled by heavier guitars than most metal bands with a commercial sound and Pearcy’s vocals separate them from the rest of the pack. I strongly urge everyone out there to catch these guys on the road and help bring them back into the rock/metal fold where they belong.

POISON

I had never seen Poison play live before and I’m really glad I finally got the chance. These guys are all about having a "Good Time." Bret Michaels, CC Deville, Rikki Rockett and Bobby Dall were pretty much non-stop energy. CC, Bobby and Bret are all over the stage running sprints from side to side to keep the stage movement from getting stagnant.

Poison played a huge assortment of tunes from their entire discography. "Cry Tough," "I Want Action," "Talk Dirty To Me," "Unskinny Bop," "Ride The Wind," "Fallen Angel," and "Your Momma Don’t Dance." They guys also performed a bunch of songs off their new album of remakes which included: The Romantics "What I Like About You," Grand Funk Railroad’s "We’re An American Band," David Bowie’s "Suffragette City" and the Kiss classic "Rock ‘N Roll All Night."

Ballads have been a big part of Poison’s allure and hearing "I Won’t Forget You", "Every Rose Has A Thorn" and "Something To Believe In" proved why this is so. The guys are able to balance high-octane energy with breaks for the crowd to catch their breath and then get reenergized for the following tune.

The band had an amazing stage show that included explosions, fire, huge sparklers and confetti dropped onto the entire crowd, which made the evening quite memorable. Safety was kept the entire time without the band being the least bit conservative.

I have to say CC Deville is a much better guitar player than he gets credit for. He isn’t ever talked about in the same breath with most acrobatic fret masters, but I’ve got to say he more than held his own during this show and you would be pleasantly surprised at his speed, power and dexterity.

There is something I have to mention that took place after the show. I have been to quite a few concerts during my lifetime. Especially being a journalist who covers hard rock and metal shows for over a decade. As my wife and I were living this show, what we experienced was the most orderly crowd I’ve been a part of. There was no pushing, shoving or rushing of any kind. People were pleasantly letting others leave the parking lot and I totally attribute this to Poison. The band wants people to feel good and that carries over to everyone.

Poison is all about having "Nothin’ But A Good Time" and they completely deliver in doing just that. Go out of your way to catch the band when they come to your town and have a wonderful time with your friends and or girlfriend.
