I Spit on Your Grave Millennium Edition Elite Entertainment 1978 Written and Directed by Meir Zarchi Starring: Camille Keaton |
|
| I really appreciated listening to director Meir
Zarchis audio commentary. It is the first time Zarchis ever spoke out about
his film and to me explains the whole reason this film was ever made. A lot has been said
against the violence in this movie over the years, but when you find out that Zarchi
helped save a young woman who was raped back in 1974, you can certainly understand why he
made this. This film is his way of dealing with the trauma, anger, and frustration. From the outside, I Spit on Your Grave or Day of The Woman lacks subtly, polish and style. But if you look closer, the film has a strong 35mm image, true unyielding violence and the revenge carried out by Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) is as powerful as any captured on film. I also thought the Kent, Connecticut locations stood out as another "character" in the movie. This film should actually be classified with unrelenting horror films like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Evil Dead. Stylistically it doesnt match up but violence wise, they are cousins. Elite has done a phenomenal job of putting together this DVD. Getting Zarchi to do an audio commentary was huge and I think the assortment of reviews helps to give an understanding of how nasty the reception of this film has been. Looking at it now, with all the information gathered together, I have to say its not fair or accurate criticism. |
