Stuck

Image Entertainment – 2008

Directed by Stuart Gordon
Screenplay by: John Strysik
Story by Stuart Gordon

Starring
Stephen Rea
Mena Suvari

Stuart Gordon is on a serious roll as a filmmaker.  The man who made RE-ANIMATOR over twenty years ago has been making some of his best work over the past three years.  Beginning with his first episode for MASTERS OF HORROR (MOH) "HP Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witchhouse" in 2005, followed by his second MOH Episode "The Black Cat," Gordon has been dead on creating work that stands out on every filmmaking level.   In 2008, Gordon's "Eater" episode for the NBC Series FEAR ITSELF was easily that show's best episode.

Now with STUCK, Gordon has created a first rate thriller that would make Alfred Hitchcock smile and Brian DePalma envious.

STUCK features the story of an overworked nurse (Mena Suvari) who late one night on her way home to meet her boyfriend, accidentally hits a homeless man ( Stephen Rea) with her car.   As the man's body impacts the front of her car his knees break and is thrown thru the front windshield.  There he lays stuck half his body thru the glass, the other half on the hood of the car.  What she does after this is what this movie is all about.

Based on a true story, STUCK is a nail biting drama with great characters, strong performances and it is one of Stuart Gordon's best.

STUCK isn't a horror film but Gordon builds suspense and the performances are key to the movie working.  Stephen Rea plays the part with total realism and we really feel for his character throughout.  Mena Suvari is in many ways the villain of the film and I found the way Gordon pulled this off admirable and fascinating.  Because she wasn't a character you would anticipate as being bad in any way.

The movie is shot pretty straight forward with emphasis on the characters and making the tense situations realistic.  The only supplements on this DVD is the Trailer.

STUCK is one of the best surprises I've seen this calendar year.
